Bamboo Hanging or Cushion with Anne Hellier
Free Machine Embroidery Workshop
Create a beautiful panel inspired by the
colours and lines of bamboo, using the
faux chenille technique and free motion
embroidery.
In the illustration here the panel has
been made into a cushion cover,
alternatively, the design could be made
into a hanging or a picture if you prefer.
Each cushion or hanging will need:
A piece of backing fabric 45cms square. For example calico |
A variety of thin fabrics, cotton poly cottons etc, they must be fabrics that fray easily. Bright colours – oranges, yellows and greens – work well
You will need to make 4 or 5 layers of fabrics onto the backing. Each piece can be 40cms square or each layer can be made up of a number of pieces, |
Hand painted calico* for the top layer of fabric in green 40cms x 60cms |
Hand painted calico* for the bamboo stalks 45cms x 30cms |
Hand painted calico* for the bamboo leaves 1 in bright green 15cms x 45cms, a 2nd piece in a paler green for the underneath of the leaves 15cms x 45cms |
Fabric for cushion back 45cms x 60cms |
2 metres matching bias binding (30mm) |
Bondaweb / Heat n Bond or similar. Maximum of 1 metre |
1 Large button (Cushion only) |
*All the fabrics used can be commercailly produced if you wish
I can provide all materials needed for £15 per student.
Each student will also need to bring the following:
Sewing Machine (and user manual) – you will be using free machine technique so you will need a darning foot and also a standard straight stitch foot. | |
Small sharp fabric scissors and / or stitch ripper | Machine threads in yellow, green and brown – or your chosen colour scheme |
Basic sewing kit ( fabric scissors, pins, tape measure etc) | Extension lead |
