Sewing Machine Confidence

Sewing Machine Confidence will show you that your machine can do so much more? Many of us know who to use our sewing machines tend to use them for straight sewing.

Even the old mechanical machines can do far more than expected. On the 4th Saturday of each month Anita will show you a new skill on your sewing machine.

This is not a dressmaking course. But you will learn the skills to make items using a pattern once confident.

During Sewing machine Confidence You will build a book of samples and add your own notes with the help of Anita to ensure you are able to dip into the sampler book at any time and still be able to complete the task at hand. Samples will include all stitches your machine is able to do.  Each stitch can be shortened, elongated and widened. You can also use the stitches for free motion embroidery too.

In the morning Anita will demonstrate a new technique for you to practice and in the afternoon you can use this technique to make a small object.

Every Month will be a different technique so you can dip in and out when you fancy it.

Each workshop will have one or more learners at different stages of their development. This makes learning more interesting for everyone.

At the beginning of each workshop You will be asked to ensure your machine is clean and lint free. Also if you have changed the needle. Once this is completed the machine is ready for use. This stage of learning is a vital part of Sewing Machine Confidence.

All Sewing Machines have to be PAT tested. If your machine needs to be tested it can be booked in on your first workshop with the studio. For  more information on this contact Anita on [email protected]

Eco Dying

A Eco Dyeing day with the West Norfolk Embroiderers Guild learning how to dye fabrics and paper using natural colours.

Eco dyeing is a form of natural dyeing where the colours from plant material are transferred to paper or fabric via steaming or boiling.

Each plant will have its own properties and depending on the freshness of the plant and the mordant used you can achieve different colours from one pant.

What you will be doing

To achieve different Eco Dyeing effects, you will be exploring using different plants, mordants and surfaces all of which will be explained to you. Some of these you will have met before and others will be new to you. You will be encouraged to fold, wrap and contain your pieces in different ways, after which they will be steamed or boiled for an extended period of time. If you have patience you will be able to wait for 24 or 48 hours before unwrapping which can give you stronger results. If, however you are like most of us the urge to peep will be impossible to resist.

Requirements

Please bring:

  • Natural fabric, at least six 35 c.m. squares of assorted silk, cotton and a 1 of wool if possible.
  • Handmade paper – this can be your own, or something like Khadi Indian Cotton Rag paper A4 size.
  • A ball of thin string.
  • Scissors
  • Large beads to identify your own samples.
  • Bits of copper piping or similar – about 4” length [optional]

Biography

Sewing has always been a part of my life. At the grand old age of 16 I was given my first sewing machine. A very old singer that was then replaced it will a Janome. Now I predominately use a Pfaff but also have a lovely old Bernina to use too.

My sewing career started with a lovely lady called Christine Davey and eventually I started the City and Guilds. Then when I moved to Kent after the first year and finished it with Ruth Issett. It was Ruth, in her own way, gave me licence to use many colours, that up to this point I would not have thought of using before.

In October 2013 I returned to Norfolk to set up a studio where I wanted to teach mixed media textiles as well as encourage other tutors into the area.

West Norfolk Embroiders Guild Branch welcome you to Eau Brink Studio to Sit and Sew Day in delightful company and surrounds. Bring something to stitch by hand or machine and then sit and sew while put the world to rights. Friendly people with a passion for all different types of stitch both traditional and experimental. The group have a wide range of skills levels and are not experts but enthusiasts. Help and advice are freely available along with hot drinks and cake at Sit and Sew Day.

While you are sitting and sewing you can take time to look at the work of Progression in Textiles group. They will be exhibiting as part of Open Studios at Eau  Brink Studio, and will have items for sale. This is a newly formed textile art group who recently had a debut exhibition at The Forum as part of Makers Festival. That work and more will be on display for you to see. The work ranges from experimental to traditional and many of us belong to the West Norfolk Embroiderers too.

West Norfolk Embroiderers Guild previously known as King’s Lynn Embroiderers has been established for over 20 years in the area. We are currently a small group and would be delighted to meet more like minded people with similar interests. We meet on the last Wednesday of the month at 7.20 at the community room at Tesco Hardwick where you would be most welcome to join us. The first visit will be free.  We usually have speakers who bring work to show us, tell us about how they became embroiderers and techniques involved in there work. On the Sit and Sew Day we meet at Eaubrink Studio on a drop in basis from 10am until 4pm.
